A major factor to consider is how walkable the place is. The website
http://www.walkscore.com/
has rankings for the 40 biggest cities. For smaller cities, plug in an address near where you want to live and see what kind of Walk Score it has. Is there stuff nearby to walk to, or will you have to drive everytime you go out your front door?

Honestly, not really sure how Columbia made this list. Its an OK city, but I don't think it is what you are looking for. Charleston is a great city although its pricey, Greenville is great (of course a bias), but definitely does not have the size of the cities in your list. Asheville is a fantastic city with a great art and music backing, but again lacks the size of the metro type city.

From the list above, Houston is a great city and I think Utah would be my second choice for the mountains mostly.

Interesting list. There are a few places I've stayed in for a while and prob wouldn't make my top 10 (Ogden and Columbia, SC).

Columbia is a great little city! But, honestly, I would go to almost any of those cities that would get me out of the south.

Love your blog, by the way! And, if you see a tall brunette slowly dying out on the Philly Marathon course, that will be me.

Living in MD now...those mountains in Utah look fantastic!!
p.s. from Sc originally--and Columbia is a nice place to live, although I would vote Charleston over Columbia
